Let's Talk Leather - A Care Guide

Leather is a generally a hardy material. With the right care, it can survive most weather conditions and a lot of activities or obstacles you throw at it. That is, if you are caring for your leather properly. It doesn’t take too much of an effort, but looking after your leather shoes will keep them strong, reliable and long-lasting.

Here's how to care for your LMS so you can wear them for ever and ever!

Know your leathers

There are a variety of different leathers and many of them are used to construct shoes. Each type of leather serves a different purpose, has a different look and texture and therefore requires different care. Make sure you double check which type of leather your shoes are composed of and research if that genre requires any specific care.

Invest in leather care products

You know those old-timey shoe shining stands? There is a reason they were in every CBD at one point. Leather shoes, especially ones that are getting worn pretty frequently require maintenance to keep them clean, hydrated and fit for purpose. A shoe brush, shoe cleaner, leather conditioner and shoe polish are all good things to have on hand and use in the former order. Leather should be cared for similarly to how we care for our skin. Think of how you religiously do your skincare routine, and imagine that these products function the same way. Leather needs to be cleaned and moisturised to look its best.

While leather is a water-resistant material, it still isn’t the best for cyclone weather. If it is muggy, damp or rainy, avoid leaving your leather shoes outside, not only because of mould or mildew (ew) but also because leather lasts considerably longer when the material is allowed to completely dry out between wears. This also means that between wears, it’s a sensible idea to air the shoes out so that the inside of them gets room to breathe and doesn’t build up sweat and moisture.

Use your dust bags

LMS shoes come delivered in their dust bags, and that’s not just for a luxe vibe. Dust bags do serve a purpose and there is a reason leather goods come in them. If you aren’t wearing your shoes too frequently, it's a good idea to keep them in the bag they came in, as dust can cause staining and degradation as it penetrates the leather over time.

Go to a cobbler

If you’ve taken all the steps to look after your shoes, but there is something you’re certain is out of your skillset to look after, find yourself a cobbler! There are plenty of shoe repair shops everywhere you go and they can work magic on what you may believe is an unsalvageable pair of your fave shoes. Whether you need them resoled, the leather cleaned professionally or some recolouring, a shoe repair shop will be able to bring most pairs of shoes back to life. It can also be beneficial to ask the cobbler themselves their opinion on what they would do to add lustre back in your shoes. They are the experts after all!

Your LMS are designed to be worn all day and night. They are durable and made to last, but still be conscious and careful of the surfaces you may encounter on a night out.
